Kristin
In 2020 Kristin lost her son Carson. He was 16. Carson took his life after he had been brutally cyber-bullied for weeks through anonymous apps on Snapchat. He had shown no sign of suicidal ideation leading up to his death, his struggle came as a total shock to the family.
After many months of grieving, Kristin knew she had to do something. She decided to do whatever was in her power to hold Big Tech accountable for the exploitative and harmful products it continues to push on our youth. As a parent survivor, she rose to become a leading advocate for Social Media Reform. She took Snap Inc. to court, passed the anti-bullying law termed “Carson’s Law” in her former home state Oregon, and testified before the Senate Committee in February 2023.
Now she is advocating to pass the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), a bill that would confer a duty of care onto technology companies, and usher in sweeping changes for social media platforms. The bill has unprecedented bi-partisan support with over 40 co-sponsors accross the isle. But the tech lobby is working overtime to do everything they can to bury the bill, pouring massive sums into the effort. It’s David taking on Goliath. Can she win this battle with the odds stacked against her?
